Recycling

Recycle Guildford

As you might have gathered, we’re really passionate about recycling. We work hard to uphold our reputation as the best recycling and waste management facilities in the South.

Our state-of-the-art materials recovery facility (MRF) helps us separate materials to be recycled. Click here to read more.

At least 70% of all the waste we handle goes on to be recycled. Unlike many of our competitors, we recycle 85-90% of the contents of our skips, ROROs and Muckaway collections.

Here are some of the things we recycle and what we do with them:

Plasterboard

New rules that came into force in April 2009 mean that plasterboard must now be segregated from other construction waste on-site. If you’re carrying out a refurbishment or demolition project that will involve removing plasterboard, we recommend hiring a dedicated container such as one of our one-tonne Dumpy bags. Contact us to discuss your requirements.

We send all waste plasterboard to be recycled into new plasterboard.

Aggregates

We crush broken bricks and concrete and separate out soil from construction waste using our £1.8 million soil washing plant. We sell these materials along with the highly prized building sand quarried at our Runfold site.

Wood

We chip unmanufactured timber (eg pallets), and send it to fuel power stations.

We send manufactured wood (eg wood containing glue, like chipboard) to fuel a specialist power station in the Midlands.

Paper and card

Our Doris bins are dedicated to collecting waste paper and card from businesses. This is then transported to a factory in Kent where it’s recycled into new cardboard for boxes.

The dirty paper we extract from mixed waste goes to make the outer covering for new plasterboard.

Before sending the paper and card off to be recycled, we compact it using a bailer. This ensures it takes up as little space as possible, helping us transport more at one time, which reduces impact on the environment.

Metals

The MRF separates out magnetic metals and any other metals are picked out by hand. We then send it to be recycled locally.

Cabling

We separate cabling from building waste by hand and send it to a specialist company to recover the materials for recycling.

Glass

We send glass to a specialist company for recycling.

Any inert waste is transported to our Runfold site where it is recycled through our washing plant. The resulting secondary washed aggregates are available for sale. Any other non-hazardous waste goes to a local landfill site, which is carefully controlled and monitored.

For commercial customers, we can supply a monthly summary of all the materials that have been successfully recycled on request. These figures will help you demonstrate to your stakeholders that your company cares about the environment. You could even use them to support an application for ISO 14001 certification.

If you have already segregated your different waste streams we may be able to offer you a discount.
