Unsung Heroes… the Bin Collection Teams!

Here at Chambers it takes a whole team of people to keep us running smoothly and efficiently, many are working behind the scenes doing a great job every day.  We call them our ‘Unsung Heroes’ and without them we wouldn’t be able to provide the great service our customers have come to expect from us.

So to honour them we are running a series of articles focusing on the guys and girls who keep us in business… the first of our ‘Unsung Heroes’ are Andy Bye & Lee Webb who work together on a bin collection lorry.

Andy has been working for Chambers for over 15 years where he worked as a Reversing Assistant before the company decided to put him through his HGV test, and he has worked as a Bin Lorry Driver ever since.  Lee has been working with Andy as his Reversing Assistant for over 7 years.

Life working on a bin lorry means very early mornings as they start work at 4am. Before they go off on their rounds they conduct a full walk-around check of the lorry and download all of the scheduled jobs on to the PDA.

On average Andy and Lee will handle over 150 jobs each day and before they arrive at each bin collection, they access the full instructions for each job via the PDA which also provides a full risk assessment.  Lee will then get out of the vehicle, to ensure that the lorry is reversed safely and without risk to themselves and any member of the public.  If the area is too busy to collect the bins safely then they will come back when it is quieter.

Lee will then check the contents of the bins to ensure there isn’t anything in them that shouldn’t be (including people sleeping in them, especially in winter), before hooking them on to the back of the lorry to be emptied.

The recent introduction of PDA’s have made a big difference to Andy & Lee as all of the administration is now done electronically which has made their job much easier and quicker.  The contents of the bins are all weighed automatically and information is sent back to the depot electronically. All the material they collect is then brought back to our recycling facility in Slyfield where it is processed and 98% of it is then recycled.

Despite the fact it’s not much fun when it’s raining, both Andy & Lee really enjoy their jobs as they get plenty of exercise and like being out and about, especially when the sun is shining. They love the fact they are totally trusted and left alone to get on with their work and have had a laugh when they come across the odd ‘interesting’ item in the bins.
