Joining Chambers in 2017 Dave became an employee at our Runfold site, driving a Tipper Truck as part of his day to day duties. Hardworking, diligent and charismatic with an infectious smile, Dave was a well liked and valued member of our team.

Following initial treatment for terminal cancer Dave returned to his position and always gave 100% to the job at hand. He said he would not let the cancer beat him. His courage and bravery throughout his battle was admired by many.

Sadly, Dave passed away in November of this year and will be sorely missed by all those who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Our heartfelt sympathies go to Dave’s family, friends and colleagues.

Did you know that more than 300 fires happen at waste and recycling plants every year in the UK – often caused by items being disposed of incorrectly? Items such as aerosols and batteries are commonly sent to our Materials Recovery Facility in Slyfield, but these can ignite and put our staff and site at risk.

You can help minimise the risk to human life, business and the environment by making 100% sure that no potentially hazardous items go into our bins, REL containers or sacks.

But this begs the question:
What items are considered potentially hazardous?
We know the rules around waste disposal can be a little confusing so here’s a quick list to remind you.

What materials pose a threat to our facility?

The following types of waste cannot go in any of our bins, REL containers or sacks:

· Hazardous wastes or liquids

· Batteries

· Fuels and oils

· Chemicals

· Electrical equipment

· Paint, resins, thinners or adhesives

· Raw meat or fish

· Asbestos

· Toners

· Explosives

· Gas bottles or canisters

· Radioactive materials

· Nappies

· Animal faeces or cat litter

·  Nappies

·  Animal faeces or cat litter

What makes them hazardous?

Everything on the list above is deemed hazardous by the Environment Agency and must not be disposed of in the same way as general or recycling waste.

If they are, it’s likely that they’ll be handled in ways we would never knowingly treat such items.

They may be compacted, punctured, become wet or get overheated, putting them at risk of igniting.

For example, aerosols contain pressurised liquid or gas that could explode when heated or compacted. Even empty cans must never be punctured as chemical residue could still be inside.

So how should you dispose of hazardous waste?

Chambers Pays Tribute to Long-Serving Team Member Clive Armstrong

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Clive Armstrong, one of Chambers’ longest-serving team members. Clive joined the company at just 16 years old as a driver’s mate, working alongside our MD Peter Chambers during his time as an agricultural merchant. From day one, Clive impressed everyone with his reliability and dedication.

Over the years, Clive took on a variety of roles within Chambers. He approached every task with diligence and care, always putting the team and the company first. Colleagues knew they could count on him, whether for a challenging job or a simple bit of advice. His professionalism and work ethic set a high standard for everyone around him.

Clive was more than a colleague. He was a friend to many, known for his warmth, humour, and willingness to help whenever needed. He played a vital role in shaping the culture at Chambers, making the workplace a supportive and welcoming environment for all.

His presence will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him. Clive left a lasting mark on the company, and his contributions will not be forgotten. Chambers owes much of its strong team spirit to his years of commitment and example.

How Supermarkets Are Helping Reduce Food Waste

According to the UK climate charity WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme), 70% of the 6.6 million tonnes of food thrown away at home each year could have been eaten. So why does this happen? Often, it comes down to ‘best before’ labels.

The good news is that supermarkets are taking action. They are preventing millions of baskets worth of food from going to waste by removing labels and encouraging consumers to use their judgement. Several supermarket chains have committed to reducing food waste by 2030 and are phasing out best before dates on packaging.

What Supermarkets Are Doing

• Sainsbury’s: Changed or removed date labels from more than 1,500 fresh produce items.

• Co-op: Replaced use by dates with best before dates on own-brand yoghurts.

• Morrisons: Removed use by dates on own-brand milk and encourage customers to use a “sniff test” to check safety.

Date labels are still required on certain products under the Food Standards Agency rules. However, WRAP has criticised best before dates on fruit and vegetables as unnecessary. They argue these labels lead perfectly good food to be thrown away.

Best Before vs Use By

• Best before dates indicate food quality. You can still eat food past this date if it looks, smells, and tastes fine.

• Use by dates indicate food safety. You should not eat food past its use by date.

By using judgement instead of discarding food immediately at its best before date, households can significantly reduce waste.

Why Reducing Food Waste Matters

Globally, 900 million tonnes of food are wasted every year. This contributes around 10% of global carbon emissions due to the resources needed to produce food and its decomposition in landfill.

In the UK, WRAP estimates that removing best before dates from the 10 most wasted fruit and vegetables could cut annual household food waste by more than 50,000 tonnes.

Protecting our planet requires action from all of us. Supermarket initiatives like these are a positive step in the fight against climate change.

Tips to Reduce Waste at Home

As food costs rise, reducing waste is also good for your wallet. You can extend the life of food by getting creative with leftovers and using ingredients fully. Common household items often safe to eat past their best before date include:

• Eggs

• Frozen food

• Bread

• Potatoes

• Canned food

• Cereal

• Baking ingredients (flour, sugar)

By saving food from landfill, you can reduce CO2 emissions, cut costs, and make a real environmental impact.

Always up for a challenge, Chambers employee Sarah Ragless took on the soaring height of a bungee jump to raise money for the Royal Surrey special care baby unit. Sarah raised a massive £760.00 which was matched by Chambers, doubling the final amount to £1,520.00

Chambers Supports the Green Hub Project for Teens

Chambers is proud to support the Green Hub Project for Teens. We donated 15 pairs of steel toe-cap boots to help teenagers stay safe while gardening. Safety is essential for hands-on activities, and these boots allow teens to fully participate without risk.

About the Green Hub Project for Teens

The project takes place in a calm, walled garden. It provides a safe space for teenagers to learn gardening while improving their mental wellbeing. The initiative uses social and therapeutic horticulture to help teens connect with nature and each other.

The programme works closely with GPs, schools, youth agencies, and parents. Teens join the project through referrals. Skilled volunteers guide them as they garden and interact with peers. These activities help teens develop practical life skills, including teamwork, problem-solving, and patience.

The Green Hub Project for Teens aims to improve self-esteem, social skills, and mental health. Gardening encourages active lifestyles and fosters a sense of achievement.
