Will you join us on our journey to reduce plastic?

Have you been thinking of reducing your everyday plastic use but don’t know where to start? Well here at Chambers we have been cutting down on plastic both at home and at work, so would love to share our journey with you so far. And since it’s #plasticfreejuly, we hope you give it a try.

As specialists in recycling, skip hire, and waste management, we would love to see single use plastics banned. The culprits in question – like straws, cling film, shopping bags, take away containers and shampoo bottles – are thrown away after one use. And because plastic isn’t biodegradable, they then break down into tiny particles over centuries, releasing dangerous chemicals that poison our planet, people and animals.

Reducing plastic in the home

So let’s begin with our plastic-free drive at home, where every member of the Chambers household is making a big effort. Even our youngest family member has set up an Instagram account recommending plastic alternatives for the home. Check it out at @partingwithplastic112

Our efforts include:

  • Buying loose fruit and veg, and fish and meat in paper bags
  • Choosing sauces and condiments in glass jars instead of squeezy ones. Glass is 100 % recyclable.
  • Carrying our own bags around with us, so we never need to buy a plastic carrier bag
  • Ordering milk and yoghurt in glass bottles from the milkman
  • Replacing cling film with umbrella food covers, silicone pot covers and glass jars
  • Always carrying re-usable water bottles
  • Using non plastic packaged shampoo and soap bars
  • Swapping plastic straws for a stainless steel version

Reducing plastic in the workplace

Next up are the steps we are taking at work. We have waved goodbye to the following items both at our headquarters at North Moors in Guildford, as well as our Homefield Sandpit in Runfold, Farnham.

  • Disposable cups and bottles. Staff use Chambers’ mugs and glasses or their own reusable bottles
  • Plastic milk bottles. Milk in glass bottles is now delivered to the company
  • Plastic money bags.  We have asked our bank to stop supplying these. Paper envelopes will do.
  • Laminating pouches. Not necessary!
  • Lunch box containers supplied by external companies. We will only allow cardboard alternatives – or food can be served straight to a plate
  • Hand wash bottles. These are being replaced with bars of soap

We are constantly looking out for single use plastic items that can be cut out – so we will keep you updated on our progress. We hope we have inspired you to give it a go and would love to know how you are getting on!

  • Businesses looking to reduce their waste output and use of single-use items can take advantage of our free waste audit. Contact: enquiries@chambers-group.co.uk

Big thanks from the Surrey County Show

The organisers of the Surrey County Show have been in touch to thank us for supporting this year’s event – which they have declared as the best for some years.

A record 31,000 people descended on Stoke Park for the event which is the UK’s biggest one day agricultural show. We provided 120 wheelie bins to help keep the showground litter free, in addition to very large Roll On Roll Off (RORO) containers for the animal waste. All the rubbish was taken to our Guildford Recycling Centre, with 98 per cent of the waste recycled.

Tracey Longhurst, Chief Executive of the Surrey County Agricultural Society said: “In our 65th year with the weather on our side, our livestock and equine competitions in full swing and the Monster Trucks in the main arena,  our visitor numbers rocketed to record levels. Consequently, we are very proud to say that this has been our best Show for some years.  This could not be done without the partnership of the tireless event team and our generous sponsors.

“We would therefore like to take this opportunity to thank you so much for supporting the Society by providing the waste management free of charge again this year.  Please thank Graham Strong, your Operations and Quarry Manager for all his help on the day.  Every aspect of the show that gains such support means that we can utilise the funds made from the Show towards both future County Shows and the other aspects of our education agenda, all of which are hugely important to us.

“We are proud to partner with Chambers Waste Management and we look forward to continuing to build a valuable and mutually beneficial relationship in coming years. It is our sincere hope that you will join us again in 2020 when we create an even bigger and better event to support our agricultural education agenda in Surrey.”

Skip driver Terry retires from Chambers after 15 years

We’re sadly saying goodbye to our colleague Terry Fullick, who has worked as a Chambers skip driver for the past 15 years.

Based at our Guildford Recycling Centre, Terry has been committed to his role of delivering, exchanging and collecting our full range of skips to households, businesses and construction sites within a 20 mile radius.

Terry said: “It’s been a good career, and I’ve enjoyed my time at Chambers. There’s a good team here, and I’ve also met lots of interesting customers during my deliveries.

“Chambers has grown dramatically since I started – even two recessions didn’t touch it!  The recycling division is huge now – and it’s great that the company is committed to ensuring that no waste is sent to landfill.”

Chambers Transport Manager Steve Enderby added: “Terry has been a real asset to us, we shall miss having him here as part of the team. We all wish him a very happy, well deserved retirement!”

Terry is planning to spend his retirement enjoying his garden, playing golf and travelling in his motor home, not to mention a trip or two to Australia to see his daughter.

We’re helping to keep the Surrey County Show litter free

The Spring bank holiday is approaching and for most local people that can only mean one thing – the 65th Surrey County Show.

Around 30,000 people will descend on Stoke Park on Monday 27th May for the event, which is the UK’s biggest one day agricultural show. It will bring together hundreds of animals, food and drink, top class entertainment and exquisite rural crafts to provide an unmissable day out with something for every member of the family. And better still, the weather forecast is looking good!

We’re pleased to be supporting the show again for the eighth year running by providing 120 wheelie bins to help keep the showground litter free, in addition to very large Roll On Roll Off (RORO) containers for the animal waste. All the rubbish will be taken to our Guildford Recycling Centre where our team will segregate paper, wood, cardboard and plastic. Up to 98 per cent of the waste will be recycled, and any non-recyclable residue will be baled and wrapped to produce a high quality refuse-derived fuel product – meaning none will be sent to landfill.

Tracey Longhurst, Acting Chief Executive of the Surrey County Show, said: “We are extremely lucky that Chambers supports the Show by providing the waste management infrastructure.  Partnering with Chambers in this way means that our teams of litter pickers are able to keep the showground clear of rubbish which makes for a pleasant environment for all our visitors throughout the day.  We also know that by using Chambers we are disposing of our waste responsibly because a large proportion of the waste produced is recycled in some way.  Both of these factors are tremendously important to us.”

Located at North Moors, GU1 1SE, our Guildford Recycling Centre (also known as our Materials Recovery Facility), handles waste for trade, construction and household customers. Find out more about our recycling services here or contact enquiries@chambers-group.co.uk /01483 504 595.

Notice to our skip hire and recycling service customers

Unfortunately our trucks are experiencing up to 45 minute delays accessing and leaving our Guildford Recycling Centre on Slyfield Industrial Estate, meaning we are reaching our customers later than planned.

The delays are due to an upgrade of the traffic lights and pedestrian crossing along the A320 Woking Road in Jacobs Well, at the junction with Moorfield Road, by Surrey County Council.

According to the Council’s website, temporary lights are being operated under reduced junction capacity, with the new lights set to be back up and running by Monday 3rd June.

We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused to our customers. Please bear with us – we will be with you as soon as we possibly can.

We will keep you updated on the situation. If you have any questions or queries please do not hesitate to get in touch: enquiries@chambers-group.co.uk / 01483 504595 / Facebook

New fire protection system in action at our Guildford recycling centre

We at Chambers Waste Management have been very concerned by the increasing number of fires at waste sites around the country, so last year we committed to installing a fire deluge system at our Guildford Recycling Centre and the challenges of finding suitable insurance.

We went out to tender to find a company who could provide a top of the range system that would meet our insurers’ approval.  Applicants also needed to be able to fit the system out of hours, to prevent disruption to our daily business activities.

The succesful applicant was Kean Fire Protection Company of Willenhall in the West Midlands, and we are delighted that the system is now up and running. It is completely automatic, with a mixture of water cannons and sprinklers and has the ability to activate water pumps within 30 seconds of a fire being detected. The System stores 1100 tonnes of water and has two stand-by Clarke diesel engines with Armstrong Pumps each capable of pumping 2500 litres per minute. It doesn’t require a power supply, meaning it will work during a power cut and is fully independent.

Our Managing Director Peter Chambers said: “The combustible nature and quantities of materials stored within our Recycling Centre mean that a fire could have a devastating effect on our team members, our buildings and our business. Working closely with Kean and our insurers, we have invested in the best system possible, which, combined with careful on-site management, reduces the risk of a serious fire.

“Our thanks go to Kean Fire, who carried out the installation completely out of hours with no disruption to our daily activities. We would have no hesitation in recommending the company for the installation of similar systems.”

Located at North Moors, GU1 1SE, our Guildford Recycling Centre (also known as our Materials Recovery Facility), handles waste for trade, construction and household customers – be it plasterboard, aggregates, wood, metal, plastic, cabling and glass or paper and card. Up to 98% of all the waste we handle goes on to be recycled.

Chambers helps spruce up Guildford Gardens

For the third year running we are supporting the fantastic Ready4Action project, which will see over 200 volunteers spring into action to spruce up Guildford gardens and green spaces.

Taking place on Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 May, volunteers will cut back overgrowth, remove rubbish, clear paths, replace fencing and demolish a shed or two! We are supplying three of our huge Roll On Roll Off (RORO) containers to hold the waste before taking it to our Slyfield plant to sort it for recycling.

Ready4Action organiser Danny Adams said: “We are thrilled that Chambers is supporting us again this year – the ROROs are essential to the project. Chambers always goes above and beyond to invest in its community.

“Ready4Action is a social action project, which helps residents who might not be able to tend to their gardens and outdoor space because of issues such as health. Our volunteers, many of whom are under the age of 18, find the experience really rewarding –and there’s a brilliant sense of community spirit during the weekend.”

Emma Chambers, finance director of Chambers Waste Management, added: “We think that Ready4Action is a brilliant initiative so are delighted to provide the ROROs again this year. We have been trading in and around the Guildford area for over 50 years and are keen to support local initiatives.”

Anyone who would like to volunteer or make a donation to this year’s Ready4Action project is urged to contact Danny at r4a@matrixtrust.com

Chambers Renews Sponsorship of Racing Champion Andrew Jordan.

We are very excited to have renewed our sponsorship of British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) champion Andrew Jordan for the 2019 season.

This is the fifth year we have sponsored Andrew, who clinched the overall BTCC drivers crown in 2013.  Last year he took fifth position in the overall driver standings.

The sponsorship announcement comes as Andrew’s all-new car for this season was revealed. The BMW 330i M Sport is based on the seventh generation of BMW’s best-selling model and has been developed by Andrew’s team West Surrey Racing. Its stunning new livery includes the Chambers logo on the bonnet and roof.

29 year-old Andrew said: “I have had a great relationship with Chambers since the 1990s and they are a vital part of making my BTCC programme work and happen. In return Chambers enjoy brand exposure through the 40,000 trackside attendance and the hugely popular TV coverage. My aim for this year is to win races and challenge for the championship, which I really believe is possible.”

Chambers’ Finance Director Emma Chambers added:  “We are thrilled to be sponsoring Andrew again. His ambition and determination make him an excellent brand ambassador for Chambers. We wish him the very best for this season and look forward to seeing him on the winners’ podium.”

The BTCC 2019 season kicks off on 6/7 April on the Brands Hatch Indy circuit, moving on to Donington Park, Thruxton, Croft and Oulton Park. Then it’s time for the traditional summer break prior to the trip to Snetterton, with the second Thruxton weekend taking place before the series heads north of the border to Knockhill in Scotland. Silverstone hosts the penultimate event, ahead of the season finale back in Kent on the legendary Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit.

We’ve invested in more new fleet

This Volvo L50 is one of three brand new shovel loaders that have started work at our Recycling Centre in Guildford. The other models are a Volvo L60 and a JCB TM320.

The shovels are used for processing our segregated material – which include metal, wood and cardboard – as well as general loading and shredding.

With safety in mind, we have fitted all three shovels with:

  • Fireward automatic fire suppression system, to reduce the risk of fire
  • Ogden VMS auto braking system  – which automatically applies the brakes if the machine reverses within three metres of a person or object
  • 360 degree recording CCTV
  • Forward facing cameras mounted on the cabs, providing the operator with a clear view ahead even when the bucket is fully loaded.

Chambers Finance Director Emma Chambers said: “The shovels have been introduced as part of our ongoing plant replacement programme, which ensures all our mobile plant is modern and meets latest safety standards.

“In addition, with recycling one of our fastest growth areas, it is vital we have the latest plant in operation.”

Chambers offers a range of recycling services for domestic and commercial customers. It also loves the planet, and send no more than 2% of the waste it handles to landfill.

Lynn and Sue release their inner ‘elf

When we dared our colleagues Lynn and Sue to dress up as elves for the day in return for a £350 charity donation, we didn’t expect them to actually do it!

But they rose to the challenge in true style, dressing head to toe in red and green, to become Santa’s little helpers for the day.

They have chosen to split the £350 between Surrey-based children’s charity, Rainbow Trust as well as Guide Dogs for the Blind.

Congratulations Lynn and Sue for a really ‘elfless’ effort!
